Monitoring your BMI for Type 2 Diabetes control

A healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9 for white and black adults

South Asian adults need to keep their BMI between 18.5 and 22.9

To see if your BMI is in the healthy range see our blog post on causes of Type 2 Diabetes

Calculate your BMI using the formula below.  It’s done in metric units so you first need to convert your weight and height into kg and metres

How to convert lb to kg

1lb = 0.45kg

1stone = 6.35kg

How to convert inches to metres

1 inch = 0.0254m

12 inches (1 foot)= 0.3048m

BMI= your weight in kg divided by the square of your height in meters.

To calculate the square of your height multiply your height by your height use the formula below

Weight (kg)

Height(m)xHeight(m)

Here is an example Jane weighs 64kg

She is 1.62m tall

BMI=      64

1.62×1.62

=64

2.6244

=24.39

Therefore, if Jane is white or black she is JUST inside the healthy range but needs to watch her weight.

If Jane is South Asian then she needs to lose weight (because she’s not going to grow any taller!)

If Jane puts on 2kg (about 4lb) she will move outside of the healthy range for BMI.

It’s easy to keep an eye on your BMI, Just work out your height in meters, multiply it by the same number and SAVE YOUR ANSWER. This will always be the same value because our height doesn’t change.
